Analysis: Why India rejects Pakistan Army Chief remarks on Kashmir?

Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid has rejected Pakistan Military chief remarks that Kashmir is jugular vein of Pakistan, saying that military leadership of a country should not provide these types of remarks and citing that it looks like carefully planned speech by the military leadership of the country.

The minister also added that the decision on Kashmir should be left with the civilian leader ship of both the country and Army should stay out of it.

‘Mention of Kashmir in that manner was unwholesome and unacceptable to India’ the minister said.

This is a rephrased news story from NDTV of India. Now let’s ponder why India did not like the remarks?

Reasons of rejection of remarks on Kashmir:

India thinks Kashmir is not Pakistan’s Jugular vein:

‘Shah rag’ or Jugular vein means the vein that passes through the throat. Pakistan military management is right in crafting the term in this light as Indus River, one of the biggest river of South east Asia flows in to Pakistan from Kashmir. In fact, only 3% of the river is in Kashmir and 97% of the river is in Pakistan. Therefore, the Army general of Pakistan did not pronounced any illegitimate term actually he also said that the issue is a global one and UN is present to make a resolution for the issue.

May be, India do not recognize that Indus river falls in to Pakistan territory and that is why it does not accept the term ‘jugular vein’.

India considers Kashmir as its own part:

Second, thing that Foreign minister of India Salman Khurshid said was that Kashmir was an integral part of India. Well, how can Kashmir be an integral part of India when it is clearly a disputed land? In fact, many people I talked to on defence.pk forum said that Kashmir is part of their country. How can that be possible when the solution is not yet pronounced by the United Nations?

However, there was a referendum in 2008 in Kashmir. In the referendum, people of Jammu Kashmir voted for India. That is probably the reason India thinks Kashmir belongs to it.

Decision of Kashmir should be left with civilian governments:

A sane point that the minister put forward is that the decision on such an issue should be left with the civilian government. However, it contradicts the previous statement of the minster. If India thinks, the decision is not yet made than how India thinks that Kashmir belongs to it.
