India, Russia team up to beat World’s top supercomputer

Russian Supercomputer Company RSC and Russian Academy of Science RSA have proposed to India to ‘jointly’ work on the world’s topmost computer system that can beat China’s Super computer Tianhe-2.

According to story from ET bureau on Times of India, RSA and RSC believes that India possesses the right skill set for building a super computer. ‘It is very strong in software and computing’ and RSC is ready to ‘share’ its technology with India said Alexey Shmelev, co-founder of RSC.

Previous month, Boris Shabanov of RSA invited Indian delegation from Indian institute of Science and the Karnataka government to explore the prospects of supercomputing hub in Bangalore.

However, Indian prime minister’s advisor CNR Rao, a national award winner, seems a little dampen saying that ‘the Chinese are ahead in the game’.

Tianhe-2, Chinese supercomputer, that means ‘milky way’ is a 33.86 petaflops computer built by 1300 scientists and engieers and is located in Sun Yat-sen university, Guangzhou, China.

The super computer was termed as world’s fastest supercomputer by Top 500 list in 2013.

While Indian supercomputer Param Yuva II is a 524 teraflops super computer that was built by Centre for development of advanced computing in a period of 3 months and with a price of 16 crore. It was ranked 62 by Top 500 list in 2012.

As per details, if cooperation between Russia and India gains momentum what the world will see is a computer system, the size of a basketball court that can perform operations of around several million personal computers simultaneously.

India, a country with third largest army and number eight on military expenditure list is trying to improve its hardware by employing new methods.

India recently sent out its own version of GPS through IRNSS 1B to the external orbit. Moreover, India is also improving its defense by retaining Israel’s ballistic missile defense system for protection against Pakistan and China.

It is being assumed India will also make a major shift in its nuclear deterrence if BJP is elected in the Elections.
