Pakistan Taliban website shuts down

Website ‘umarmedia’ alleged to be from Pakistan Tehreek e Taliban mysteriously disappeared from the internet and was inaccessible on April 7 (Monday).

According to news story from Dawn, the website was hosted through a Pakistani company located in Punjab (the name is not mentioned on Dawn). However, the owner of the company said that he had no idea about the content of the website.

Pointraiser also dispatched an email to the real host of the website publicdomainregistry.com, which says that the domain was 'merely' registered with the website it (publicdomainregistry.com) was not hosting it. Moreover, PDR abuse team has acknowledged that the website status is now 'suspended'.

The website was hosting videos, magazines, speech transcripts as well as declarations from Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan. It is said by the owner that the client used proxy serves to manage the website from Karachi while the address of the client provided to him was 'fake'.

It should be noted that Pakistan Taliban is a banned outfit and is currently in talks with government for a peace pact in north frontier region of Pakistan.

It can be assumed by the date of launch (24 Jan) that the website was launched pre negotiation period or during negotiation with the Pakistan government.

The website now gives a 404 error and whois.net says that the website remote host cannot be contacted.
